How to Get That Stinky Sports Bottle Clean Again

You know that moment. You open your bottle for a sip and yuck — that sour, musty smell hits you. Or worse, you see some dark gunk at the bottom. Don't chuck it yet. Here are four fast ways to fix it, using stuff you probably already have.

1. Drop in a fizz tablet
Grab those denture-cleaning tablets or similar. Fill the bottle halfway with cold water, drop one in, wait 5 minutes, shake it hard, wait another 5, shake again, then rinse. No scrubbing needed. Works like magic on residue and odours.

2. Soap and a good shake
Warm water + a few drops of dish soap. Cap on, shake for a minute, drain, rinse. If you have a long brush (baby bottle brushes are perfect), scrub the inside, the threads, and the cap's spout too. Leave it open to dry completely.

3. Vinegar soak for stubborn cases
Mix 1 part white vinegar with 4–5 parts water. Fill the bottle and let it sit for a few hours (or overnight if it's really bad). Short on time? 10 minutes with a stronger mix (2 teaspoons vinegar in warm water) can still help. Scrub, then rinse like crazy until the vinegar smell fades.

4. Rice shake for narrow necks
Can't fit a brush in? Throw in 2 tablespoons of uncooked rice, warm water, and a drop of soap. Cap it and shake vigorously for about a minute. The rice acts like tiny scrubbers. You can also add a splash of vinegar and a pinch of baking soda for extra power. Rinse well.

A few quick tips:

  • Rinse right after every workout — it's the easiest thing you do.

  • Skip the dishwasher; hot water can warp plastic.

  • Don't use bleach — it's harsh and hard to rinse off.

  • And honestly, if your bottle's over a year old and still smells after all this, just get a new one.

That's it. Clean bottle, happy workout. Now go drink something that doesn't taste like regret.
